Citrus County sits on Florida's Nature Coast along the Gulf of Mexico, making its western third acutely vulnerable to hurricane storm surge - the county's dominant hazard. Hurricane Helene (2024, Category 4) produced the largest surge ever recorded in county history, overwhelming Crystal River and Homosassa with 3 to 5 feet of water inside structures and prompting over 100 airboat rescues overnight; Hurricane Idalia (2023) pushed 7-foot surge levels into coastal communities, and Hurricane Hermine (2016) caused roughly $102 million in damage to 2,694 structures.
