Johnson County sits in southern Illinois's "Little Egypt" region within the NWS Paducah forecast area, placing it squarely in the path of Gulf-moisture-fueled severe weather. Tornadoes are a documented and recurring threat: an EF-2 confirmed in March 2025 tracked 15.9 miles through Vienna, West Vienna, and Bloomfield at 115 mph, and the county was included in the May 2025 FEMA major disaster declaration covering Franklin, Jackson, Johnson, Pope, Saline, Union, and Williamson counties after a regional tornado outbreak. Large hail, including baseball-sized stones recorded in the county as far back as May 2000, accompanies supercell thunderstorms that push northeast out of the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys in spring and early summer.
