Okaloosa County sits on Florida's Gulf Coast panhandle and faces direct hurricane strike risk from Gulf of Mexico systems, with Hurricane Opal (1995, Category 3, 144 mph gust at Hurlburt Field), Hurricane Ivan (2004), and Hurricane Dennis (2005) all delivering major wind and surge damage to the county. The coastal communities of Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and Mary Esther are most exposed to storm surge, which can push well inland across the low-lying Gulf shoreline and Choctawhatchee Bay.
