Storm restoration across Osceola County

Osceola County is an inland Central Florida county with no direct coastline, so storm surge is not a primary threat; however, it sits squarely in the path of weakening but still-dangerous Atlantic and Gulf storms that track across the peninsula. The dominant hazard is catastrophic inland freshwater flooding driven by the county's chain-of-lakes system - particularly Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) and Shingle Creek - which back up rapidly under tropical rainfall totals. Hurricane Ian (2022) deposited 10-16 inches of rain in 32 hours, flooding more than 1,700 homes in Kissimmee and Buenaventura Lakes, triggering the county's only mandatory evacuation, and producing high-water rescues throughout the area in what the Kissimmee city manager called "one of the most catastrophic flooding events in the history of the city." Hurricane-force and tropical-storm-force winds remain a secondary but real threat as landfalling storms maintain sustained winds well into inland Osceola before weakening, and the county's rapid growth has placed tens of thousands of newer homes in flood-prone lakefront and creek-adjacent zones that carry FEMA Flood Zone AE designations.
