Polk County sits in the geographic center of Florida, roughly 60 miles inland from both coasts, so it faces no direct storm surge threat - but that inland position does not mean protection from hurricanes. The county has been crossed by the eyes of multiple major storms at hurricane strength, including a historic 2004 season in which Charley (Category 2 at landfall), Frances, and Jeanne all tracked directly over the county, converging over the Bartow area. The primary hazard is extreme rainfall-driven flooding: Hurricane Milton in October 2024 produced a National Weather Service-classified 1-in-1,000-year rainfall event, dropping over 12 inches on Lakeland in 24 hours and pushing the Peace and Hillsborough Rivers into prolonged flood stage, inundating all area lakes and hundreds of road segments. Wind damage is a consistent secondary threat, with strong inland wind gusts - Milton made landfall as a Category 3 and was still at Category 2 strength crossing Polk County - causing widespread tree fall, structural roof damage, and extended power outages across Lakeland and the surrounding communities.
