Sangamon County sits in the heart of Illinois tornado country and has recorded 93 confirmed tornadoes since 1950, including an F4 that killed two people in Springfield in 1957 and a pair of EF2 tornadoes that struck Sherman and Riverton in March 2023 with winds reaching 130 mph. Large hail is a seasonal constant - significant hail events occurred as recently as May 2025 - and the county is also squarely in the path of Midwest derechos, with a June 2023 derecho producing widespread straight-line wind damage across Springfield and a July 2024 event delivering 85-95 mph gusts. The Sangamon River and its tributaries create recurring flood exposure, with heavy rain events regularly triggering flash flooding across low-lying areas of the county. Winter storms bring ice accumulation and heavy snow that down trees and power lines, compounding structural and roofing damage already sustained during spring and summer severe weather seasons.
