Storm restoration across Seminole County

Seminole County is an inland county in Central Florida, so it faces no direct storm surge threat, but it is highly vulnerable to catastrophic rainfall flooding driven by its geography: the St. Johns River and its tributary lakes (Jesup, Harney, Monroe) drain extremely slowly due to the near-flat terrain, and tropical rainfall pushes storm surge upstream from the coast while local rain simultaneously fills the lake system. The county has sustained major impacts from nearly every significant hurricane to cross Central Florida in the modern era, including over $36 million in damage from Hurricane Charley (2004), widespread flooding and more than 260 water rescues from Hurricane Ian's 16-plus inches of rain (2022), and what the county itself calls the worst flooding in its recorded history during Tropical Storm Fay (2008). Sustained winds from landfalling Gulf hurricanes routinely reach tropical-storm to Category 1 force across the county, causing widespread tree and roof damage, prolonged power outages, and debris loading that compounds flood drainage problems across its heavily developed, tree-canopied suburban neighborhoods.
