Storm restoration across Suwannee County

Suwannee County is an inland north-central Florida county with no direct coastline, but it faces severe hurricane wind damage and prolonged inland flooding as its primary storm threats. The Suwannee River, which bisects the county, rises dramatically after tropical rainfall and can remain above flood stage for weeks, cutting off roads including U.S. Highway 90 near Live Oak, as occurred during Tropical Storm Debby (2012). Hurricane Idalia (2023) and Hurricane Helene (2024, Category 4 landfall) both caused extensive wind damage to structures, downed trees, and power infrastructure across the county, with Helene damaging the Suwannee County Courthouse and multiple historic structures in Live Oak. The county also sits downcurrent of the Big Bend coast, making it vulnerable to compounding river-level rise when Gulf storm surge pushes water upstream through the Suwannee River system.
